Computer Aided design (CAD) is the use of computers (or workstations) to aid in the creation, modification, analysis or optimization of a design.  This software is used to increase the productivity of the designer, improve the quality of design, improve communications through documentation, and to create a database for manufacturing. Designs made using CAD software products such as Solidworks, AutoCad, etc. are easy to manipulate and modify to suit the designer's needs as well as unique situations such as product development.

CAD files can also be translated to several different Computer Aided Manufacturing languages for use with Computer Numerical Control (CNC) Machines for fabrication under 14 CFR Part 43 or manufacturing under 14 CFR Part 21.
